My paintings explore the experience of being immersed in a place-the way landscape can hold memory, atmosphere and a sense of belonging. Working primarily in oil, I build landscapes through expressive brushwork, simplified forms and saturated colour. I am interested in the tension between observation and interpretation :  the recognizable structure of the forest, lake, garden or historic site remains present, while colour, light and texture allow the image to become something more subjective.  Many of my paintings begin with places that carry a particular sense of history or personal perspective - Canadian forests and lakes, pathways, gardens and architectural remnants.  I am drawn to the traces people leave within the landscape, as well as to those moments when nature seems to reclaim or transform them.  My intention is not to reproduce a landscape exactly, but to share the feeling of standing within it:  entering a forest, following a path towards light, encountering and discovering, or pausing beside still water.
